This page is our summary of what Southern Company publishes, in our own words. It is not Southern Company’s requirement list and it can be out of date. PrequalReady is not affiliated with Southern Company, Avetta or any other network or operator.
1. Which network Southern Company uses
Avetta, for some of its companies. Southern Company’s Technical Shared Services supplier page describes two forms it sends contractors, a Contractor Safety Qualification Questionnaire (CSQQ) and a Contractor Compliance Background Form, and says that instead of them some entities within Southern Company may get the same information through the Avetta program used for contractor prequalification. Its TSS Contractor EH&S Specifications require a project-specific safety plan submitted through Avetta (formerly BROWZ).
Which form or network applies to you depends on the Southern Company entity and your contract. The pages we read name no Avetta grade or flag.
2. What the sources say contractors must do
For Technical Shared Services (TSS) construction projects, the specifications say:
- A safety plan before the bid. Submit a project-specific environmental, health and safety plan through Avetta for review and approval before the bid process. It must meet regulatory requirements and Southern Company’s own.
- A site addendum before mobilization. After award, a site- or plant-specific addendum covers at least hazard communication, an emergency action plan, key contacts, responsibilities, a PPE assessment, competent persons and, where required, spill and storm-water plans. It goes to the contract administrator at least 15 working days before mobilization, unless site management agrees another schedule.
- Training. Meet OSHA’s construction training rule (29 CFR 1926.21), complete the Southern Company Safety and Health Orientation Checklist and site-specific training at mobilization, give the craft a site-specific orientation with a test, and refresh it every year.
- STEP. Contractors working for TSS, unless exempt by contract, use Southern Company’s STEP behavior-based safety observation program, with user licenses provided at no cost.
For access to non-nuclear generating plants, the generating plant requirements page says:
- Drug, alcohol and background program. Contractors follow the Southern Company Generation program in the contract, using the designated providers. Drug screens are renewed every 12 months; background checks, where required, every 7 years. Alcohol testing applies only on suspicion, after an accident or for reasonable cause.
- Project Security Rules. Contractors granted plant access sign them, every year.
- Training. PowerSafe training is no longer required, but contractors remain responsible under their contracts for basic safety and site-specific training.
3. The yearly dates that apply
These dates apply to a contractor that works through Avetta for Southern Company. Our guide to the Avetta annual update explains the March 31 date.
- Every 12 months from the date you first subscribed: the Avetta subscription renews automatically, with the renewal invoice issued 30 days before as your notice (Avetta End User Service Agreement).
- February 1, until April 30: post the OSHA 300A summary, if you must keep OSHA injury and illness records (OSHA 29 CFR 1904.32).
- March 2: submit the 300A to OSHA online, if your establishment is covered (OSHA 29 CFR 1904.41).
- March 31: complete the Avetta annual update (Avetta supplier update FAQ).
- Every 12 months: each worker’s drug screen and the signed Project Security Rules, for generating plant access.
- Every year: the site-specific orientation refresher on TSS projects.
- Your own dates for this client: background checks every 7 years where required, and the expiry of your insurance.
4. Confirm with Southern Company
Requirements change. The web pages show no date, and the TSS specifications show an update of May 24, 2023. Before you rely on any item here, confirm it with your Southern Company contract administrator and in your Avetta account.

6. Keep it in one workspace
PrequalReady is a workspace that keeps each hiring client’s requirements, your documents and every expiry date in one place, and emails reminders before your dates. It does not log in to Avetta for you, and it does not judge whether your documents are acceptable. It is free during early access. Keeping many contractors qualified? See the consultant view.
